Wine We Love - Sauvignon Blanc DayWine We Love - Sauvignon Blanc Day
Added: 24 Apr 2017
Every week we are posting a wine from our portfolio that our Sales team love. This weeks wine is in honour of Sauvignon Blanc day chosen by our Glasgow & The West Sales rep, Darren Wilson: Marquis De Goulaine Sauvignon Blanc from Val de Loire, France.

This winery is quite remarkable: it is accepted as the oldest continuous wine producer in the world, making wine since around 1000AD. It is believed to be the third oldest registered company in the world!

The Goulaine family were first mentioned in the seventh Crusade (1248) and today over 30 generations later the noble Goulaine’s are alive and well and still own the beautiful Chateau de Goulaine as their ancestral home.

The Marquis himself is a figure reminiscent of the Scottish enlightenment; very keen on the arts and botany, in fact the family run a butterfly farm on their estate. The Marquis can trace his family directly back to Mary Queen of Scots, so the Auld Alliance is alive and well!

Marquis De Goulaine Sauvignon Blanc is a flinty, zesty and distinctive Sauvignon from France’s cool Loire Valley.
Crisp citrus flavours, particularly lemon and grapefruit, dominate and linger on the palate. Perfect to celebrate Sauvignon Blanc Day!

I was lucky enough to visit Chateau Routas this month, situated in the heart of Provence. This estate makes some fantastic wines – their delicate Provence Rosé being particularly noteworthy.

My home for the next few days was a traditional French style Chateau in burnt orange with pretty blue shutters surrounded by picturesque vineyards, woodland and wild boar.

The estate is 260 hectares and rich with biodiversity – wheat fields, meadows, woodland and olive trees to mention a few. 40 hectares are planted with a mixture of vines (including varietals of Grenache/ Syrah/ Cabernet Sauvignon/ Viognier/ Cinsault and Chardonnay). The wine which is all estate – grown and bottled is overseen by the talented Jean Louis Bavay (Winemaker) and the lovely Philippe Saraciva (Vineyard Manager). Whilst I was visiting an abundance of beautifully, bright red poppies could be spotted throughout the estate...

International Sauvignon Blanc Conference Marlborough New ZealandInternational Sauvignon Blanc Conference Marlborough New Zealand
Added: 22 Feb 2016
MD Billy Bell Birse- Stewart was a delegate at the International Sauvignon Blanc Conference Marlborough NZ this month which was attended by 300 of some of the most famous names in wine like Oz Clark and Robert Joseph. The conference allowed delegates an opportunity to discuss where NZ is in terms of quality wine production and how their main product, Sauvignon Blanc, is perceived on the global wine market. Billy visited Hunters which is undoubtedly one of the outstanding vineyards of Marlborough. He also visited Giesens, which are creating really interesting wines matured in oak fudors with grapes grown in the famous Clayvin vineyard. ‘It was a marvellous opportunity to spend three days learning so much about what makes NZ Sauvignon Blanc the ‘must have’ wine on every wine list’ says Billy.’ I would like to see more than one style being offered, a bit like Chablis is on better wine lists, as clearly there is regional variation and almost a ‘Cru system’ emerging’ is Billy’s advice to customers.

The announcement of the trophy winners from the International Wine Competition has seen a clutch of wins for many of our agencies.

The Campolongo di Torbe Amarone from Masi has been a runaway success. Having already received tri bichieri in Gambero Rosso and 98/100 from James Suckling, it was a double trophy winner for the IWC. Best in class for Amarone Classico was trumped by winning the overall Italian Red Wine Trophy.

Equally sucessful was Grahams 30 year old Tawny. This win ewone the trophy in both the Tawny category and the overall Port Trophy.
Wine Importers have long been a supporter of ports, with an extensive range of aged vintage Port, as well as stocking the excellent Tawny’s of the house.

Still in fortfied wine, Williams and Humbert were sucessful with the Sherry Trophy for the 20 year old Palo Cortado. We have long known it was an amazing wine, it seems now that the secret is out!

An historic wine that goes from strength to stength is Klein Constantia’s Vin de Constance. This year it was again a double winner for South African Sweet wine and Muscat trophies.

Yalumba (as always!) had their sucesses. Their FDR1A scored the Eden Valley Cabernet Trophy while Pewsey Vale Contours again wowed the judges to win the Australian Rielsing Trophy.

Wine Importers’s reputation for Rhone Valley wines continued to build too. Delas Cote Rotie and Chapoutiers petit ruche Crozes-Hermitage both wining trophies in their category.

Some of these wines are made in small quantities so get in touch with your rep now to secure your allocation.

Customers from all over the country descended on Gleneagles for Wine Importers biennial tasting. It was the biggest ever tasting we have ever hosted: more agencies, more wines more food and more attendees than ever before.

It was a great sucess with an exceptional range of wines to taste including Italyís best red wine according to gambero Rosso (an Amarone from Rizzardi) top end Burgundy, Scotlands best beer (Jarl) Iconic new world wines and even some en Rama sherry from Williams and Humbert.

The cream of the trade came and enjoyed the superb dishes cooked by the experienced Gleneagles chefs. They tried to find wine pairings to accompany such dishes as Wagyu beef and Goat curry.

Our winemakers were also rewarded afterwards with a meal where they were piped in by MD Billy Bell!

If you missed the event, make sure to get in touch so we can welcome you when we next hold the event in 2016.

2013 Vintage in Bordeaux2013 Vintage in Bordeaux

Our MD Billy accompanied with a group of Scottish customers, picked grapes at the famous First growth Chateau Mouton Rothschild this year. ‘The vintage almost a month late this year due to a cold, wet Spring which delayed flowering’ says Billy.’ Harvest in the Medoc will be small—around 28 Hectolitres per Hectare, but there was little rot where we picked and the concentrated ripeness suggests a good quality wine will be made. The wine was made for the first time in Mouton Rothschild’s new state of the art winery which could be described as a ‘five star’ hotel for winemaking. ‘A great experience was to sit down and enjoy a fantastic lunch with 600 other regular pickers—lunch never tasted so good’ comments Billy. Wine Importers will feature Mouton Rothschild 2013 in our En Primeur offer next Spring, which will most likely be on allocation. Fyne Ales are riding a wave, with superstar beer Jarl having scooped another award.

Jarl was awarded champion beer at the Scottish Real Ale Festival. This comes after its success of champion bottled beer at SIBA.

Jarl is proving to be a unique beer, managing to pack in lots of flavour despite its session strength.

Jarl is available along with the full range in bottle from Wine Importers.
